Artist's Comments

Here's my very first model pained for Warhammer 40K. I don't actually own the model (it's the property of :icononiakki:) but he let me paint it up for him.

I opted to paint it Ultramarine colors because in the WH40K world you can't go wrong with painting someone like an Ultramarine, so it made the most sense.

Excellent work for a first try. I remember my first models, they were a real mess. I think I got more paint on my hands than I did on the plastic!

Oh I did that as well. ^^; Plus a whole bunch of it ended up in unintended places on the model as well so some places have like 6 layers of paint covering up various stray brush strokes. >.>

Anyway, thanks a lot for the :+fav:. Someday I'd like to master wet brushing so that I can get the eyes in the skulls to come out dark like you did on [link] and [link] I tried it, but really all that happened is I got a smeary mess. ;.;

Wet brush is easy, but you can achieve the same sort of effect with drybrushing. Just start with a darker basecoat. All of the metal I drybrush starts with a base of Chaos Black. Try it, it's easy and it produces results.

nice one if it is your first model you have painted. you even painted the eyes.

I like the snowy scene you threw him in. ^^

I originally did start with a chaos black foundation and then built up. Though now that you explain it it seems more than easy enough; rather than adding the eyes later, just simply don't color them white in the first place by dry brushing the skull.

Thanks! ^_^

I would have liked to do better on the eyes, but even as it was I ended up painting one of them twice since I had trouble getting the bush to do a fine enough point. Having pupils (which the standard marines mercifully don't have) would have been right out at my current skill; they'd probably just come out as a blob and cover up most of the eye. >.>

Well, I needed some kind of environment that wasn't apartment carpet or tile floor, and since it was kinda blizzarding outside, he got to be an arctic trooper for a few minutes; though it wasn't the best possible option since I had to keep the camera in a plastic baggie and that ruined about 75% of a 4 megapixel image since I had to shrink and sharpen to pull any detail out.

don't speek so ill of yourself. when i first began i didn't even mind to paint the eyes because it was just to difficult... so there is nothing wrong with your model. i still have some difficulties with some techniques even after 5 years.
