Tears

Description

So this was a totally new experiment for me. This was drawn using solely the brush tool in Sai. No erasing or undo was allowed. The only parameters I ever changed were color and brush size.

This is especially new for me as there was no real sketch; just more paint underneath. In all it's just caked on like a cheap whore's makeup.

As such this is entirely a new work and style for me, so critique on it would be super appreciated as I have never even studied this way of doing things. ^^;

I'm also aware that this is a bit tangential to the ATG theme so I'll be trying again later this week. (My original idea just didn't want to play out and this thing kinda developed organically as I was trying to model something better.) So if it doesn't apply just deny it.

And now I'm off to bed seeing as I have to be up for work in *checks clock* 5 hours.

Disclaimer: Unfortunately, I do not know SAI well enough to help you out. I can give some opinions though. I do not hold myself to be the pinacle of painting, or even that good at it.

The first issue that springs to mind is that the entire painting looks a bit blurry, like an out of focus picture. In photoshop, I'd tell you to use Opacity 50%+pressure control, flow %50, and size pressure control. The purple and pink stripes do not seem to exhibit this problem.

For a first painting this is pretty good. I see you stuck with using show-style outlines. I did too. If you wish to try again, I suggest NOT using outlines. Block out the pony in your 'base' color and then use three lighter (one almost white) and three darker (one almost black) shades of your base to shade and highlight you curves. I think you will find that it looks even better than outlines. Basically the way you did the tears, only with graduations.

Other than the suggested technique, you just need to do it alot. I will warn you, I spent 2 hours on my first painting (outline style) and 25 on my second (shaded) so there is a HUGE tradeoff.
